Melanie smiled and nodded.
"I invited you didn't I?"
Walking to her red convertible, she pulled her car door open.
"Let's hit the mall first."

Ran was trying not to giggle through class as she read Melanie's notes. She rose her pencil and twisted it around in her hand, brainstorming what else to write. Then the teacher walked by and Ran flipped her worksheet over the note so she wouldn't notice anytihng suspicious.
Then, after Ran felt it was safe, she scribbled something down and passed it over.

A few minutes later, the bell rang, and the students scrambled out of class, eager to go home. Ran collected her books together.
"French is a little more complicated for me," Ran admitted, rubbing a sheepish hand behind her head.
So...I'm going to your house to study?" she asked again, hopefully.

Giggling again, Melanie whispered to Ran.
"Tout le monde peut se tromper présent."
She saw Ran with a weird look.
"It means Everyone makes mistakes here." She explained.
All through class, the girls exchanged notes here and there.

Ran laughed. "That was great!" she enthused, her eyes sparkling in amazement.
Not bothering to reply in French, she said, "In an apartment a few blocks down," she replied.
Then Ran smiled wistfully. "I wish I was born in Paris. Instead I was born in China."
The teacher caught her talking, and shushed her. Ran blushed.
"I also tend to have the ability to talk loud enough when I'm with people I know," she whispered.

Melanie nodded.
"Je suis d'accord avec vous là-dessus."
She replied in french fluently.
"Wonderful, Miss. Goodwin."
The teacher clapped her hands.
"Merci beaucoup ."
Turning back to Ran, she spoke , still in French.
"Où habites-tu?"
Realizing she was still speaking in the language, she giggled.
"Sorry, I'm used to it since I was born in Paris."

"She seems nice," Ran stated. Then she smiled wistfully. "So inheriting your family business must be easy for you. My family is forcing me to study, in order to become a doctor, so it's hard. That's why I moved out."
"My older brother's already one, against his will, so I'm next," she added. "I'm trying to avoid that though."
"French? I'd much prefer something like Literacy...or Phys. Ed." She laughed. "They're both subjects I really don't need to think much in."

Melanie answered the first question easily.
"Umm that was my friend Sasha. And she didn't smirk...she...um...smiled."
She mentally hit herself on the forehead.
"Oh. My parents run a fashion business. Mother sales everything at H&M Clothing and others."
The bell rang and the girls entered their last period of the day: French.
"This is my easiest class ever."

"Who was your friend back there? She was looking kind of...smirkish...at you." Ran blinked, but then proceeded to follow Melanie to their classes together.
Ran smiled, growing more familiar with Melanie as the other girl talked on, about her life.
Then she stiffened noticibly when Melanie said something about family and businesses. Her face turned pale, but she squeezed a smile out.
"Um. What type of business does your family run?" she asked finally, her face still ashen.

Melanie laughed.
"Okay...Hello."
Smiling, she talked about her life and family all the way to their classes.

After Melanie hurried out of the classroom, Ran gathered her things and headed for the door.
Hoping to see Melanie again, as she was the only person she knew so far, she turned her head several times, looking for a pink-haired girl.
Later, as she'd been walking down the hall, she almost jumped as she heard the familiar bubbly voice.
"Hay is for horses," she countered lamely, smiling.

"Oh," She said slowly.
I guess her parents...died.
The bell rang long after that.
"Um, I got to go. See you after school."
Melanie took off quickly.
She couldn't stand being away from Ran all day.
"What's the matter?" Her friend Sasha asked.
"Nothing," She replied too quickly.
"Your falling for the new girl." Sasha stated smirking.
"N-no..." She stuttered.
Before Sasha continued, Melanie ran and caught up with her new friend.
"Hey."

Ran smiled, feeling relieved and grateful. She nodded. "Sure," she said. "Thank you for the offer," she added, laughing a little bit.
"I didn't think I'd make any friends here..." she said nervously.
She's so nice...
"I live alone, actually," Ran stated. "Life is a bit easier like this."
