Lacey followed the boy obediently to his house, not far from where they were, thankfully. Once inside, she noticed the whiteboard with "Where's Evan?" written haphazardly in black expo marker, all capital letters. So, his name is Evan... Lacey thought, not wondering too much about why the family was wondering where he'd been. She wasn't one to meddle in the business of others, and who knew? Maybe it was a few days old.

Once in the car, Lacey felt uncomfortable. Not because there were too many people. Not because they weren't nice to her, because they welcomed her very nicely for an absolute stranger. But because she was in the car with someone she knew not at all and his family. The boy spoke up, asking her name. "Oh, I'm Lacey. Lacey Lovitt. And yes, I'm new. Moved here a few weeks ago, but we just got settled in. My mom figured we'd wasted enough time unpacking and stuck me in school." She smiled at the younger girl next to her in the backseat, and the three of them got out at the curb when the car rolled to a halt. "Thanks again," Lacey smiled sweetly to the mother before closing the door.

She followed him and his little sister to where the others stood, watching her every move with critical eyes. Lacey gripped the hem of her uniform's skirt nervously. The boy held his hand out and introduced himself. She didn't mind that it took a while. She was pretty shy herself most of the time, today was no exception. "Nice to meet you," she replied, slipping her hand into his. She stood a few steps away as his friends interrogated him, no doubt questions about her. Lacey couldn't hear their words, nervous and fearful that they hated her and disapproved. She wasn't usually one to care about such things, but it was a small town...and she didn't want to be alone. And if they hated her... Lacey pushed the thoughts away, not wanting to think of such things. The girl behind her was quiet, until a friend of Evan's said something about her, to which she responded "Chut up!" And yes, it was definitely a 'ch' sound. A small frown arose on Lacey's face. What was the point in making fun of her? She was Chinese, as they said. High school students were cruel. At least Lacey already was used to it.

When the bus pulled up, she walked up the short set of stairs after the younger girls and took the first empty window seat she could find, which was situated somewhere in the middle of the vehicle. Lacey watched the rest of the kids from the bus stop file in, the chinese girl shuffling to the very back. One of Evan's friends winked at her. She turned to look out the window and sighed, ignoring him. He looked like the cocky type.

ooc: lol, now I really want to re-watch them too xD good thing I own both. Darko is an epic last name :O

The clouds swirled from one shape to another above his head. Blue emptiness reflected from his smokey gray eyes back into the world. Whether or not the fact that a car had infact collided with his now hunk of metal bicycle had settled into Evan's mind was unknown but either way it was just another tale to tell Dr. Thurman. The name of his therapist. Thera-pissed. He retracted that; she wasn't so bad for a shrink. Shifting onto his side. He stirred, faintly.

"Oh god, I'm so sorry! My brother...well, can be a bit absent-minded... are you okay?" the voice seemed pretty inocent itself, but that's just how everyone sounded in this strange town. Words wouldn't formulate from his lips, his mind was still in a fuzzy haze from the impact. That or being approached by some new face was uneasy.

The air was mixed with a male's voice and soon the rumbling of an engine as the car sped off in the direction of school. School? Home? Shit he knew he was going to be late if he didn't get up. His settled on the friendly gesture extended out towards him, taking his calloused hand he grasped hers and stood up unsteadily, hoping he didn't look too drunk or stoned. Decided he didn't care. Running a hand over his face groggily, he shrugged his shoulders in a lazily manner, "It's fine...." was all he said, picking up what was left of the bicycle which was scrunched up pretty bad. "And yeah come on..." Evan waved his hand in the direction of his home.

Nobody seemed to notice his return. His father Eddie was out on the front lawn, teasing big sister Elizabeth with a leaf blower. She shrieked, flailing as the gust of filtered air hit her face. Blonde hair whipping around her makeup-darkened eyes, model's nose. She stalked off in a huff, passing ten-year old Samantha, who was busy jumping on a trampoline. Sproing. Sproing.

He clumsily dropped his bike and went inside feeling Lacy would follow. Clearly he Ignored the query written on the magnetic fridge board:

WHERE'S EVAN?

----
Mrs. Darko didn't much hesitate to accept the girl's request for a ride to school. Evan didn't much bother to mention the incident but played it off like he had met her on his way home this morning, which had led into another set of questions from his mother but taking notice of the time Mrs. Darko didn't pursue the conversation.

"So what did you say your name was?" Evan's eyes strayed back to the girl sitting within the car. His younger sister Samantha curiously looking between the two, "Your new here?" the small girl suddenly asked. Feeling the car slow to a stop, Evan got out of his mother’s Taurus, tucking in the white shirt of his school uniform as he went. Rose called to Samantha before driving away. “Don’t forget, Ms. Farmer will bring you home after practice!”

Samantha waved a cheery good-bye, but Evan only turned away at Rose’s farewell. He followed his sister to the bus stop, where the usual crowd waited for some juicy gossip. "Sorry, I keep forgetting...." Evan began, extending his hand out towards her, "Evan."

Ooc: Lol I went back and watched the movie again xD, and S.Darko just for the fun of it. I hadn't seen it in forever. And yep I decided to keep the last name Darko for him, just because its an epic last name rofl.

The young teen stared blankly out the passenger seat window. Women jogging, men watering lawns. And it was almost as if everyone was doing it all at once. It reminded her of the perfect little town in Edward Scissorhands. But this town, Middlesex, was real. And now it was her town. Her eyes glazed over and she watched the blurring colors of the surroundings blend into one another. It made the neighborhoods much more...beautiful. She liked things better that way. When she could see that life could be a beautiful place if you got past the dim, gloomy bits.

Then her head slammed against the door of the car.

Lacey heard the screech of the brakes as they came to a halt, and turned her head to see the damage. A boy was lying in the middle of the road. "You hit someone?!" she exclaimed to her older brother in the driver's seat. "Don't think so." "Then explain him," she pointed. "He looks hurt!" She quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and jumped out of the car, the faint smell of burnt rubber lingering around the car. She slammed the door shut and ran to the boy's side. "Oh god, I'm so sorry! My brother...well, can be a bit absent-minded... are you okay?" Lacey asked, genuinely concerned, but before he could utter a response, her brother stuck his head out the window of his car. "Get a new ride, I gotta go!" He yelled and started the car back up, driving away without a reply from Lacey. "Shit. Asshole." She mumbled, flipping him off.

She stood up and offered her hand to the boy, who took it without too much hesitation, and she helped him stand. "Uh...I can safely assume you go to Middlesex High, right? It's the only high school around, so I guess I don't even have to ask. Can I get a ride?" Lacey asked, embarrassed that he had to see her jerk of a brother drive off without a care. Her brother was only giving her a ride because his work was in the same direction. It's not like she'd be late or anything. It was still really early. She just felt weird about asking a random stranger for a ride to school. Well, at least he was her age. Cute, at that.

Eyeing the bike, Lacey sighed. "Again, I'm really sorry. But I don't think you can use your bike for a while. Looks busted."

[ooc: my picture's so cheerful xD but Gretchen wants to see the beauty in life, so I thought it'd be appropriate.]

Still. Cold.

Gooseflesh rubbed against asphalt, stones catching on T-shirt cloth. The air tasted like morning light, pale and sharp. He saw the faint outline of trees through his eyelids. Stirred at the persuasive rustle of leaves in the wind, the birds awake long before. The surface he was lying on felt curved, like a bowl. He imagined he was the last morsel of food at the bottom of the bowl, waiting to be plucked up by a hungry monster from the sky...

A sharp pebble gently poked his cheek. He stirred, opening his eyes. Slowly uncurled himself, joints popping in the crisp air. The world as seen through the top of the bowl eventually straightened itself into a tree-lined horizon. Forested area surrounded the cul-de-sac he was lying in. From this viewpoint, he could look off the ridge into empty space, where rock canyon opened into the modest little town below.

His town.

He blinked sleepily at it from the ridge, dew in his hair. His side ached from the gritty surface of the road. He clambered stiffly onto his bike, which had been lying on its side beside him, and began pedalling.

The air snapped at his clothes as he flew back down the path. The October wind was temperamental, but still warm. He squeezed his frozen knuckles on the handlebars, the chill of the ground lying dormant in his bones. Wondered if it was possible that his marrow might turn to ice.

A red Trans Am flashed by him as he re-entered Middlesex, a world very different from the one seen from the Ridge. From above, Middlesex laid out in the fog was a ghost town, an Atlantis lost beneath the clouds. Once inside, he could feel himself sinking back into the folds of reality. Old women jogging in their faded piped sweat suits. Older men watering their lawns. The kids usually hung out at the malls, or the scrub area surrounding the town. Murdering beer bottles with BB guns. Most of them were probably still asleep.

He passed a sign advertising the Middlesex Halloween Haunt festival, complete with dripping letters and a garish picture of a Jack-O-Lantern. The graphic was terrible. Surely they could have hired somebody better. He thought about the sketches lying unseen in his bedroom drawers, stuffed haphazardly under boxer shorts and pairs of socks. The image flew out of his head as he shifted his weight in attempt to turn the bike down another street. To his unfortunate luck, Evan hadn't much had time to break as a car clearly came his way. Instead he attempted to side turn around it and skim past it but in that short period of time he had toppled over on the bike and collided with the rough rubble of street below him. "Fuck..." he groaned, laying there painfully on his back. The car had braked rather abruptly, and someone stepped out from it.

Ooc: I didn't really want to make the begining to long, because it would have been pointless lol. But I suppose your character would be the one exiting the car that almost hit him? Very Happy anyways it'll get better as we go.
