| Vic's eyes were instantly drawing themselves over the boy's form without actually making it seem like he was sizing him up. The boy was young, maybe a year or so younger than Vic himself but was obviously not use to the sea. His long legs and short arms were both slender. If he had ever been on a boat before he would have had some meat on him. Vic was instantly wondering why the lad was wanting to change his life all of a sudden. Sure, the sea could call to anyone at any time without warning - but this kid was strange. There was something about his laughing eyes that were just strange.
After taking another sip of his rum Vic leaned across the table, lifting an eyebrow at the boy. His name was Jack? Well there was a sea name if he had ever heard one. Jack was such a common pirate name that it was only natural he had come up with something like that. With a slight smirk, Vic looked at his hand before shaking it with a healthy, hearty grip. His hand was caked with dirt which means that he was probably an apprentice for a horrible job and thirsted for adventure.
"Alright, Jack!" Vic started in a booming voice, throwing his captain hat back onto his head, "What kind of a job did you have before this, because obviously you have never been on a ship.." He answered as he tipped his head downwards towards the boys legs. |

| "I want to join yer crew. Ye are looking fer people to join your crew right?" Scarlet made sure to speak in a gruffer and less-formed tongue than she had been raised to speak. Perching herself upon the edge of the desk, she dropped her teal hues to gaze upon the piece of parchment - blank, completely blank. Raising an eyebrow, she raised her gaze back to Vic's face, taking a sip of her own rum in an attempt to mirror his actions. "I'm healthy and strong, i can do just about anything ya tell me. I ain't afraid of heights neither...and i can swim." Listing off her qualities, Scarlet's gaze swept the tavern as she suddenly realised that she had not thought up a name for her male persona. Eyes alighting upon a worn looking piece of parchment tacked to a nearby wall; a well drawn image of a pirate with a rhesus monkey perched upon it's shoulder smiled out at her, the words 'Come see Cap'n Jack and his Musical Monkey'. Jack! Yes Jack would do. "I'm Jack by tha way, just jack!" Thrusting a hand in his direction, her skin sufficiently grubbied by soot she had smeared in place before leaving the blacksmith. _________________ - Thanks to Vegapunk for the awesome Sig! ^_^ |

| [That's okay. ^^]
Vic had been lost in the happy memories of his childhood when he had sent it on a boat. The man he had served under had been the greatest pirate he had met yet, and probably forever more would be. Johnathon Keener had the sharpest mind and the keenest eye. He could smell gold and fortune from miles away, and he could taste the rum in the air when they were about to make port. He had taught Vic all that he had ever known and then willed him his ship on his deathbed. Vic was going to take good care of the Dragon's Blood, as it housed the sweat and blood of his life since he was 7. That boat would be his only home, but he wondered what it might have been like to stay at home.
What would it have been like if he hadn't run away from home, trying to save himself from his father's drunken ramblings and beatings? He could have endured them and grew up learning how to stay away and avoid the mans rage. He could have known his mother and mourned for her death properly when she had died. He could have gotten a beautiful maiden by his side and he would more than likely be wed by now with children. But no, he had chosen this life and boy was he happy for it.
Then there was a loud bang that made Vic snort and shoot up in his chair, the hat falling off of his head and onto the table. His stormy gray eyes flashed upwards in a sort of violent flash before he took in the sight that was in front of him. A young lad, a very scrawny young lad (though that wasn't uncommon these times) was standing there. He had the most wild red hair Vic had ever seen and the most gentle green eyes. Gosh this boy was young.
"What can I do fer ya, laddie?" He asked in his thick, sea accent as he snatched the rum that had been set down for him with his thick fingers, nodding his head in a gentle thanks before drinking the ale. |

| Scarlet paused within the doorway of the local blacksmith, dipping her head in greeting to the large-bellied man whose skin was smeared with soot. Despite the late hour the blacksmith was only just shutting up shop, but not before the young woman collected the item she had come here for. “Miss Scarlet, this is a mighty bad idea you have. Your father will surely have me hanged if he knows i helped ye...” Pale green eyes danced with a gentle merriment, “Father would not do such a thing, neither will he find out that you have helped me.” Her lips curved upward in a smile as she tied a piece of black cloth around her head, taming the wild red hair which had once cascaded around her shoulders. Now it was cut short enough to pass as the hair style of a male, her feminine features acceptable as those of an adolescent boy. Of course there was her female body to worry about, but having thought of everything Scarlet had concealed her chest with layers of bandages, wrapped tightly around her chest. With this and a loose shirt and vest, no one would be any the wiser and think of her only as a slim teenage boy. The large man extended a meaty hand, grasped within it a worn looking scabbard which contained an old but well-crafted blade. Scarlet grasped it, sliding her belt through the loop in the scabbard before fastening it around her waist. “Where will you go Miss Scarlet? And your father? He will be devastated once he finds you gone...” The blacksmith trailed off mid-sentence as the young woman shot him a look, “Oh come now Miss, whatever kind of man he is - he’s still your father?” Scarlet shook her head, “You know as well as i do that Father won’t care...he’s far too preoccupied with his new wife and their precious little baby boy.” The only response from the sweaty looking male was a deep sigh, clearly he knew that what the young lady said was true. “Well Miss, i want you to have this as well...you’ll need it.” Scarlet’s hand dipped slightly beneath the weight of the small purse that had been placed within her palm. ~~~~ That was two hours ago and now she sat inside the tavern, cradling her mug of rum within her hands as her gaze swept the room. Scarlet had been watching Vic for some time, sitting at his desk with no one coming to talk to him. Now a ship would be the perfect way to get out of the port quickly, and pirates certainly wouldn’t ask too many questions to rose suspicion. Yes, it would be perfect. Downing the last few mouthfuls of her rum, she pushed herself to her feet and crossed the room, leaning against the bar. Ordering another two mugs of rum, she carried them toward Vic’s table and placed one rather loudly upon the table before clearing her throat. | It was a dark night - outside that is. He was inside of the tavern at the port that he had just held up. He hadn't been moored up for a while and out at sea without a crew was getting pretty lonely. Right now, he had set up a post by the door with a desk where he had his parchment setting still. He would need to enlist a crew for his boat, Dragon's Blood, but so far he didn't get any bites on the line. People were too busy getting drunk and hitting on the barmaids to notice his little set up over by the door.
Vic sighed as he pulled his captain's hat over his tired eyes. He hadn't gotten a wink of sleep since he had pulled in here and was starting to feel the toll of being on land. When he was out at sea he could stay awake for days without feeling the weariness of sleep. On land he didn't have his sea legs and always found himself too tired for comfort. He yawned to himself as he picked up his almost empty mug of rum and downed the rest of it in one gulp, leaning back in his chair as he looked around.
Sometimes he wished that he could have had a life like this. A steady job that brought in money that he could waste at a tavern, pick up pretty women and run away with them for some fun. Instead, the sea had a calling for him. He loved the sea, everything that it had and everything that it didn't have. It was all so real for him, so real and so home. There wasn't another place that was like it for Vic.
He leaned back a little further in his chair with his hat tipped over his eyes and was soon falling asleep. |
